What is a Disciple?

Fishing by Faith

That Was Then
This Is Now
C. S. Lewis summarized quite strongly just what it means to be a disciple.

The Christian way is different: harder, and easier. Christ says, “Give me all. I don’t want so much of your time and so much of your money and so much of your work: I want you.... Hand over the whole natural self, all the desires which you think innocent as well as the ones you think wicked—the whole outfit. I will give you a new self instead. In fact, I will give you Myself: my own will shall become yours.” Both harder and easier than what we are all trying to do.  C. S. Lewis

Jesus Spoke Clearly About Discipleship!

Jesus came and told his disciples,
“I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of  all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”  ~ Matthew 28:18–20
And Jesus was saying to them all, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake, he is the one who will save it. For what is a man profited if he gains the whole world, and loses or forfeits himself?”  ~ Luke 9:23-25
So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”  ~ John 8:31-32
"So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.” ~ John 13:34–35

Dare to Commit!
Oswald Chambers, author of My Utmost for His Highest, was brutally honest about the state of discipleship in society.

“The "show business," which is so incorporated into our view of Christian work today, has caused us to drift far from Our Lord's conception of discipleship. It is instilled in us to think that we have to do exceptional things for God; we have not. We have to be exceptional in ordinary things, to be holy in mean streets, among mean people, surrounded by sordid sinners. That is not learned in five minutes.”

Dare we believe? Dare we ACT?

Taking action on our stated beliefs is not always the case. Sometimes we want to do the believed action... but other parts of life intervene and we continue living in a safe and societal way.

After watching the following video, try and give an honest answer to the questions that follow.

1. Do I really believe what the Bible says about discipleship?

2. Am I willing to live my life based on those stated beliefs?
